Patient support for Enzyme Support: From better treatment to better quality of life

Studies show that only 30-50% of patients comply with prescribed drug treatment. Reasons can be ignorance, disease denial, misunderstanding, forgetfulness or lack of motivation over time. For our client, which provides treatment for patients with endocrine pancreatic insufficiency, the aim was to improve adherence to their medication. This was to reduce gastrointestinal distress, increase quality of life (QoL) and optimize dosing.

Adxto's solution:
Adxto developed a digital Patient Support Program to create a bridge between healthcare and home care. The program includes text and email reminders, data collection, and regular calls with specially trained nurses. The programme is free of charge for patients and sponsored by the pharmaceutical company, which in return receives anonymized statistics and insights into how the treatment is working in practice.

Results:
Through targeted education, support and motivation, adherence to treatment was improved in the 140 patients who participated in the program. This resulted in:

  • Improved bowel habits and reduced stomach symptoms.
  • The ability to eat all kinds of food without problems.
  • A feeling of alertness and better quality of life.
Patients also reported feeling safe and cared for. Treatment could be optimized by increasing dosages within recommended ranges.

COPD Adherence Project: Increasing adherence and quality of life

Challenge:
The purpose of this project was to develop and test a patient support program for newly diagnosed COPD patients. The aim was to increase adherence to treatment and ensure that patients correctly used the client's product, an inhaled solution. The challenge was that only 25% of patients continued with treatment after 12 months.

Adxto's solution:
Adxto developed a support program that followed patients for 12 months, with the goal of increasing adherence by 30 percentage points.

  • The program included recruiting patients in collaboration with doctors at health centers and at screening days.
  • A specially trained nurse offered regular phone calls and support to ensure correct use of the medicine, encourage smoking cessation and improve quality of life.

Results:
Patients showed a dramatic increase in adherence to treatment:

  • 80% compliance after 6 months (compared to 35% previously).
  • 75% compliance after 18 months (compared to 25% previously).

Patient voice:

  • "Positive feeling that someone cares."
  • "Good to be able to ask questions about the medicine in particular."
  • "The support program would have been more useful to me if I had received it earlier in the course of my illness."
