The Gränby project
Collaboration in cancer care
The Gränby project is a unique development collaboration between Uppsala University Hospital, Adxto Care, Beigene, Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer. The aim has been to create a more accessible, person-centered and decentralized cancer care in Region Uppsala. In January 2024, a new treatment center opened in Gränby shopping center, where cancer patients can receive their treatment in a calmer and more accessible environment than at the hospital.
Collaborating actors

Patients' experience of care in Gränby
Patient surveys and interviews show that patients are very satisfied with receiving treatment at Gränby. They particularly highlight the quiet environment, better parking facilities and improved accessibility. Many patients feel less sick when receiving treatment outside the hospital, and almost all would recommend others to receive care in Gränby.
The experiences of health professionals
Nurses and doctors working in Gränby appreciate the more structured work environment and reduced stress compared to the hospital. At the same time, the project has brought new forms of collaboration between hematology and oncology staff, which has contributed to increased knowledge sharing. However, some staff have expressed that the distance to Gränby has been a challenge.
Health economic outcomes
A health economic analysis shows that the cost per treatment in Gränby is around 50% lower than in the hospital. The biggest difference is seen in facility costs, where hospital settings are significantly more expensive than out-of-hospital care. Treatments in Gränby also take less time on average, saving resources and improving patient flow.
Home administration of subcutaneous injections
A sub-project of the Gränby Initiative has trained patients to take some injections themselves at home, reducing the need for unnecessary hospital visits and giving patients more freedom. Patients involved in the pilot project find this positive and convenient.
Cancer rehabilitation through group exercise
The Gränby project has also included a focus on cancer rehabilitation through exercise. Patients have been offered group training at the Gränby gym, leading to increased physical activity and improved health outcomes. Many of the participants want to continue exercising even after the project ends.
Next steps - further development of decentralized cancer care
The project has laid the groundwork for further initiatives in decentralized cancer care. Lessons learned from Gränby are now being used to explore the possibility of offering some treatments in a care bus, which could make cancer care even more accessible to patients across the region.
